VAGINAL DRYNESS

One out of every three women in menopause experiences vaginal dryness, but it can affect women at any age due to fluctuating estrogen levels. Lack of moisture can interrupt your sex life and cause burning and discomfort. Dr. Mary DuPont helps women overcome the irritation and pain of vaginal dryness. If you live in Montgomery County Maryland, such as Bethesda, Potomac, Rockville, Chevy Chase, or in the Greater Washington DC area, contact Capitol Urogynecology to schedule an appointment to get treatment that resolves your issue.

WHAT CAUSES VAGINAL DRYNESS?

Estrogen is a hormone that promotes a moist and lubricated vaginal region. When your estrogen levels are low, you may experience vaginal dryness.

DO YOU ONLY EXPERIENCE VAGINAL DRYNESS DURING MENOPAUSE?

Women of any age may have a dip in estrogen due to stress, premenstrual hormone changes, childbirth, or breastfeeding. During menopause and afterward, though, estrogen levels drop considerably — making vaginal dryness a particularly prevalent problem if you’re going through menopause or are postmenopausal.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF VAGINAL DRYNESS?

Vaginal dryness can result in itching and burning, especially during urination. You may also have serious discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse. Dr. DuPont may do a pelvic exam and notice thinning of your vaginal wall and redness that indicates your dryness needs treatment.

HOW DO YOU TREAT VAGINAL DRYNESS?

Dr. DuPont may ask you to stop douching and find alternatives to certain medications, such as antihistamines, that exacerbate dryness. Topical estrogen creams are an option but not always the most convenient or effective.
After a consultation, Dr. DuPont may suggest you undergo a simple, noninvasive laser procedure known as the MonaLisa Touch. The energy from the laser induces your own self-healing.

WHAT DOES THE MONALISA TOUCH DO?

The MonaLisa Touch is a scientifically proven way to rejuvenate the vaginal walls. After treatment, your skin feels stronger, more supple and more lubricated. The procedure involves applying a CO2 laser to the vaginal wall using a vaginal probe. The laser stimulates your body to produce more skin-firming compounds of elastin and collagen to firm up and revitalize the area.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WITH THE MONALISA TOUCH DO I NEED TO RESOLVE MY VAGINAL DRYNESS?

Dr. DuPont usually recommends you go through three treatments with the MonaLisa Touch, spaced about six weeks apart. You may start to see results after your very first session, however.Dr. DuPont usually recommends you go through three treatments with the MonaLisa Touch, spaced about six weeks apart. IS THE MONALISA TOUCH SAFE?

The procedure with the MonaLisa Touch is minimally invasive and has very few side effects. The actual treatment takes just minutes and has no downtime, though you may be asked to refrain from sexual intercourse for two to three days after treatment. Numerous studies have backed up the effectiveness and safety of the procedure.
